Scholarship Description: The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (CREEES) at Stanford University is delighted to announce its Wayne Vucinich Fellowship. This is a twelve-week residential fellowship to be offered from April-June 2018.


About Institute: The Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies is Stanford University’s hub for the interdisciplinary study of a vast region stretching from the Berlin Wall to the Bering Strait.


Degree Level: This is a twelve-week residential fellowship to be offered from April-June 2018.


Available Subject: The Wayne Vucinich Fellowship is a twelve-week residential fellowship at the Stanford University Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (CREEES).


Scholarship Benefits: The fellowship award funds international travel, health insurance, and a visa, in addition to a $12,000 stipend for living expenses.


Eligible nationalities: International students are eligible to apply but preference will be given to scholars who are residents of countries that fall under the direct purview of the Center: Russia, East Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.


Eligibility Criteria: The fellowship is open to scholars in any discipline whose research focuses on historical or contemporary topics in Russia, East Europe, the Caucasus, or Central Asia. Scholars who have received the PhD within the past five years are eligible to apply. (A PhD in hand is required at the time the residency begins.) Preference will be given to scholars who are residents of countries that fall under the direct purview of the Center: Russia, East Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.


The fellowship funds international travel, health insurance, and visa support, in addition to a $12,000 stipend for living expenses. In addition to library access, the fellow will have use of a shared workspace at the Center.


Application procedure: A complete application consists of the following materials:




  • Vucinich Fellowship application form

  • A letter of application/research proposal

  • A Curriculum Vitae

  • A writing sample (book chapter or article length, in English)

  • A short proposal for a public lecture/workshop to be held at Stanford (can be related to research proposal)

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
