Scholarship Description: The UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) and the Humanitarian Institute are invited applications for Social Science and Physical Science Research Fellows in Conflict, Disaster and Migration. Fellowships are available for International students.

Scholarship Provider: The UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) is a cross-UCL Institute, which leads research, knowledge exchange and advanced teaching in the area of risk and disaster reduction (RDR). The Humanitarian Institute is a new UCL initiative budding off from the IRDR, supported by the Provost, which aims to mobilise UCL’s research, expertise and teaching to impact global humanitarian challenges.

Applicants must have excellent written and oral presentation skills in English.


Degree Level: Fellowships are available to pursue research.

Available Subject: Fellowships are awarded in Social Science and Physical Science Research Fellows in Conflict, Disaster and Migration.

Scholarship BenefitsBoth positions are available immediately and are funded for 1 year full time in the first instance at UCL grade 7 (£35,328 to £42,701 per annum).

Number of ScholarshipsTwo research fellowships are available.

IRDR Physical Science Research Associate in Conflict, Disaster and Migration

Essential criteria:

  • A PhD related to monitoring and modelling of natural hazards or migration. (The thesis must be submitted before the post holder takes up the appointment.)

  • Knowledge of research, modelling and analytical methods in natural science.

  • Ability to analyse and model complex data

  • An awareness of complex issues surrounding conflict, disasters and migration.

  • Ability to present complex information effectively to a range of audiences, internationally.

  • Demonstrated ability to pursue internationally excellent research natural hazards and migration.

  • Excellent organisational skills.

  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills in English. Desirable criteria:

  • A record of published research in peer-reviewed journals.


Essential personal qualities:

  • Proven commitment to high quality research and knowledge exchange.

  • The successful applicant should have strong interpersonal and team working skills and be able to adapt to working in different cultural and social contexts.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary context.

  • Commitment to join and contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction and Humanitarian Institute.

IRDR Social Science Research Associate in Conflict, Disaster and Migration

  • An awareness and understanding of complex issues surrounding conflict, disasters, migration and gender.

  • Ability to present complex information effectively to a range of audiences, internationally.

  • Demonstrated ability to pursue internationally excellent research in conflict, disasters, and/ or migration.

  • Excellent organisational skills.

  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills in English.

  • A record of published research in peer-reviewed journals.
