Scholarships Description: The University of Cape Town (UCT) is inviting applications for Postdoctoral research fellowship on Resilience in the Anthropocene starting on the 1st January 2019 and end on the 31st December 2019. The application is open to candidates of any nationality.


The Resilience in the Anthropocene project aims to understand the practices of security professionals through their implementation of the concept of resilience.


The University of Cape Town (UCT) is South Africa’s oldest university and is one of Africa’s leading teaching and research institutions. The College developed into a fully fledged university during the period 1880 to 1900, thanks to increased funding from private sources and the government.


Degree Level: Fellowship is available to pursue Postdoctoral research programme.


Study Subject: Fellowship is awarded to study Postdoctoral research on Resilience in the Anthropocene.


Scholarship Award:




  1. The value of the fellowship is R300, 000 and is tenable for one year.

  2. The fellowship will start on the 1st January 2019 and end on the 31st December 2019.

  3. The fellowship is tenable for 1 year, where renewal for a second year is possible; such renewal will be considered on evidence of satisfactory academic progress and availability of funds.

  4. The fellowship does not include any travel allowances, accommodation or other benefits. Application for tax exemption will be made by the University.


Eligible Nationalities: Application is open to candidates of any nationality.


Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must meet the following criteria:




  •  The application is open to candidates of any nationality;

  •  Applicants must have received a doctoral degree (within the previous 5 years)

  •  May applicants not have held full-time permanent professional or academic posts? successful applicants will be required to comply with the University of Cape Town’s approved policies, procedures and practices for postdoctoral fellows.

  •  The University of Cape Town reserves the right to:

  •  Disqualify ineligible, incomplete and/or inappropriate applications,

  •  Change the conditions of award or to make no awards at all.


Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.


Application Procedure: 




  1. A letter of application outlining the applicant’s expertise, research interests and experience;

  2. A Curriculum Vitae including a list of publications and the scholarly output;

  3. Certified copies of all academic transcripts;

  4. An example of a written work;

  5. Names and contact details OR letters of reference from two referees. The referees must be academics who have taught, supervised or worked alongside the applicant.
