This is the twenty-first consecutive year in which Doctors of the World–Medicos del Mundo (MdM-Spain) has conducted the Luis Valtueña International Humanitarian Photography Competition.

Who Can Enter

The competition is open to adult amateur and professional photographers of any nationality.

Themes

Photographs must be related to any of the following themes: humanitarian action, international cooperation, social exclusion, human rights violations, armed conflicts, natural disasters, refugee and immigrant populations or socially excluded groups.

Photographs and Format

Each participant will be allowed to submit a maximum of ten photographs, which can be distinct or part of a series. Only photos were taken between January 2016 and October 2017, which have not been previously entered, will be accepted. Photos must be submitted in digital format. Photographs must be sent in *JPEG format with a minimum resolution of 300 ppi/ppp, all high quality (12) compressed images with an Adobe RGB or SRGB color profile. The images must have a minimum size of 40 cms on their smallest side. The digital image’s original structure can only be manipulated through darkroom techniques such as adjusting the brightness, contrast, and color, underexposure, and overexposure. No other change to the original digital image will be allowed. Only single frame photos will be accepted.  Photomontages and multiple exposures will be excluded from the competition. In case of doubt about a possible digital alteration of the image, beyond what is allowed in the conditions of entry, the organization reserves the right to request from participants to supply the original unretouched photo file as recorded by the camera, or a scanned copy of any unaltered negative or slide.

How to Submit Entries

Photographs must be sent in *JPEG format via WeTransfer. The digital images must not bear any mark identifying the entrant. The images will be sent by E-mail with the subject line: XXI PREMIO LUIS VALTUEÑA + ENTRANT’S NAME AND SURNAME Along with the photographs, entrants must ALWAYS submit a completed entry form downloadable. In compliance with Spanish Organic Law 15/1999 on the Protection of Personal Data and its complementary regulations, MdM-Spain advises that participants’ personal data sent with their application, including their email address, will be incorporated into a file for processing purposes, which remains the property of the association. The purpose of this data collection and processing is to facilitate the development of the competition and to enable us to contact you if you are one of the winners according to competition rules. Entries can be submitted at any time from 0.00 17th July 2017 until midnight 10th November 2017 (Spanish time).

Unique Prize

The following unique prize will be awarded:

The winner will receive a project grant of 6,000 euros (amount before tax, which depends on the winner’s nationality and situation) to develop a photography project composed of at least 50 photos and a 30-minute video shoot related to the work of

MdM

-Spain, whether in Spain or in other countries where the organization is undertaking the humanitarian action or international cooperation programs. The winner together with

MdM

-Spain will define the objectives and the development of the project, taking into account common interests and the operative security conditions related to possible destinations. The amount of the grant should cover all expenses needed to develop the project. Once the project’s terms are settled,

MdM

-Spain will not demand an account of those expenses. The grant will be given in three parts: 50% after the judges’ decision, 25% when the project starts and the remaining 25% when the project concludes. The photo project will have to be finished before the 15th December 2017.

Selected Photos

Along with the winning entries, MdM-Spain will select other photos from all those submitted to form part of a travelling exhibition. In their promotion, MdM-Spain will identify the photographers whose works have been chosen.

Judges Decision

The judging panel, made up of leading photographers and MdM-Spain representatives, will meet 45 days after the submission deadline in order to select the winners. After meeting and coming to a decision, the panel will announce:

  • the winner of the project grant

  • at least three finalists, as previously mentioned.


The work of these successful entrants will feature in the travelling exhibition. The panel’s decision will be reached by the simple majority of its members with no right of appeal. The panel may choose not to award a given prize if there is a lack of qualified entries. The panel’s decision will be conveyed to the creator of the winning photo or photo series, along with the other finalists, by phone or email using the information supplied on the entry form. This will occur before December 15th of the relevant year.

Withdrawal of Entries Submitted

If a photographer wishes to remove his/her entry, they must lodge a request at least twenty (20) days before the closing date for submissions, viz. 30th November 2017. This can be done via an email sent to MdM-Spain will then arrange for the entry to be returned.

Awards Ceremony

The awards ceremony will be held at a public event during January or February 2018 at a time and place to be determined.

General Rules

By participating in the Luis Valtueña International Humanitarian Photography Competition, entrants expressly accept its conditions of entry. Entrants accept that MdM-Spain may postpone, shorten, extend, modify, cancel or suspend the competition if necessary. This absolves MdM-Spain of all responsibility, provided it has communicated any change in an appropriate way. The winner and other finalists, in agreeing to the conditions of entry, afford MdM-Spain and its international network, the worldwide, non-exclusive right to make use of the winning entries until they revert to the public domain.
