Scholarship Description: The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz is delighted to announce research scholarships and fellowships to young academics (doctoral and postdoctoral researchers) from Germany and abroad.

About University: The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz is a non-profit institution devoted to academic research that is not part of a university. Its purpose is to conduct academic research on European history. The Institute fulfils this purpose through the individual and joint research efforts of its staff and through the research scholarships and fellowships that it awards to academics both from Germany and abroad.

Degree Level: Fellowships are available to pursue Doctoral as well as Postdoctoral programme.

Available Subject: Funding is provided for both doctoral and postdoctoral research dealing with the religious, political, social and cultural history of Europe from the early modern period to 1989/90. Comparative, Transnational and transfer-historical research projects are particularly welcome, as are projects which deal with topics of intellectual, church or theological history.

Fellowship rates (from 01/01/2012)

The research scholarships of the IEG are jointly funded by the federal and state governments. The research scholarships are exclusively for the purpose of conducting the research project described in the application at the IEG. Thus, no other form of employment or funding can be pursued or availed of during the duration of the scholarship.

IEG doctoral scholarships have a monthly value of € 1,200.

Family allowance

Where the spouse of a scholarship holder resides in Germany and is not in receipt of income in excess of € 450 per month, the scholarship holder may receive an additional family allowance if this is applied for during the scholarship application and granted.

Value of Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

The research fellowships of the IEG are jointly funded by the federal and state governments. The fellowships are exclusively for the purpose of pursuing the research project detailed in the application at the IEG. Fellows are therefore not permitted to pursue or avail of any other form of employment or funding for the duration of the fellowship.

IEG postdoctoral fellowships have a monthly value of € 1,800.

Family allowance

Where the spouse of a fellow resides in Germany and is not in receipt of income in excess of € 450 per month, the fellow may receive an additional family allowance if this is applied for during the fellowship application and granted.

 

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

Doctoral Fellowships:

These are open to doctoral researchers from Germany and abroad who have at least a Masters level degree in history, theology or another discipline which works historically. They must have been pursuing their doctorate for no more than three years at the time of taking up the scholarship, though exceptions may be made in exceptional circumstances. It is not permitted to apply for a scholarship for the same dissertation topic in subsequent years. As a research institution that is not part of a university, the Institute does not hold any examinations and does not award any academic qualifications. Dissertations are completed under the supervision of the scholarship holder’s supervisor at her/his home university.

Postdoctoral Fellowships:

The IEG awards Postdoctoral Research Fellowships to young academics from Germany and abroad who have completed their doctoral dissertations and are pursuing a new research project. The IEG offers them the opportunity to create the foundations for their continuing academic career as independent researchers. The academics in the IEG research areas are keen to interact with Postdoctoral Research Fellows.

Applicants should have been awarded their doctorate no more than three years before the beginning of the proposed fellowship (non-academic activities are not relevant to the application). The final examination or defence of the dissertation must have been successfully completed by the application deadline. It is not possible to avail of funding for the final phase of doctoral research and continuing into a subsequent postdoctoral project.

Eligible Nationalities: Researchers from Germany and Abroad are eligible to apply for this fellowship programme.

  • a list of academic publications if you have any

  • a description of the research project including the structure of the dissertation and a work plan and schedule for the proposed research stay in Mainz (5 pages /15,000 characters excluding spaces)

  • Copies of university transcript and proofs of language competence


Application for Postdoctoral Research Fellowships:

Attachments in the following order:

  • Completed application form

  • Curriculum vitae; list of publications (if available)

  • Brief description of the proposed project with a detailed working plan and schedule for the intended stay at the Institute (5 pages/ 15,000 characters excluding spaces)

  • Digital copy of dissertation

  • Copies of university transcript and proofs of language competence


Deadline: Doctoral Research Fellowships:

Decisions on the awarding of scholarships for doctoral researchers are made twice annually, in the spring and in the autumn. The deadline for the next call for applications for research stays in Mainz beginning between in January 2018 or later is August 1, 2017.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships:

Decisions on the awarding of postdoctoral fellowships usually occur once annually. The deadline for the next call for applications for research stays in Mainz beginning in or after April 2018 is October 1, 2017.
