Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for Fernandes Fellowships open to researchers working in all subject areas at European institutions. Fellowships are available to students from all around the world.


Supported by a generous donation to the University, the Fernandes Fellowships aim to develop lasting research collaborations between Warwick and Europe.

Degree Level: Fellowships are available to pursue research.


Available Subject: The Fernandes Fellowships are open to researchers working in all subject areas, however applicants working in the following research fields are particularly welcomed;




  1. Human disease, particularly reproductive health, antimicrobial resistance, cancer and ageing

  2. Data, artificial intelligence and associated ethics

  3. Economics, management, behavioural science and governance

  4. Energy, sustainability, and circular economy

  5. Analytical technologies for healthcare, life science and the environment


Scholarship Benefits: Fellows will receive;




  1. A stipend of £2,000 per month (to cover accommodation and subsistence)

  2. Travel costs (including visa fees) of up to £1,000

  3. Research, support and training costs of up to £3,000.


All expenditure must be in line with the University Financial Regulations.


Number of Scholarships: In total 25 Fellowships are available over the three years.


Eligible Nationalities: Fellowships are available to students from all around the world.


Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:


The fellowships will support researchers who are relatively early in their research career and who are currently employed in academic positions (first academic post, tenure track position or independent research fellow) at a university or other research institute in any non-UK EU or EEA country.


Applications are encouraged which support links with our partner universities in the European University Alliance (currently members of L’Université Paris Seine consortium & Vrije Universiteit Brussel).


Fellows must have less than 10 years postdoctoral experience (taken from the date given on the PhD certificate to the start date of the Fellowship).


The Fernandes Fellows must remain in the employment of their home institution during the Fellowship and will have Academic Visitor status at Warwick.


While there is no restriction on nationality, appropriate permission to work in the UK is required before taking up the Fellowship.


Application Procedure: Applications must be submitted by the nominating Warwick academic (Principal Applicant) uploading the following documents to the online application system;




  1. A completed application form (available on the scheme webpage). This must be completed in line with the guidance given below and be signed by the applicant and Head of Department (or nominated representative). Electronic signatures are acceptable.

  2. A CV (maximum 4 pages, in English) for the proposed Fellow highlighting any publications, activities or achievements that are especially relevant to this application.

  3. A letter or email from an appropriate senior individual at the Fellow’s current institution (e.g. Head of Department) in support of the visit and describing the prospects for the development of longer term research links.
